Transit Grant of $19.6 Million headed to Utah
Washington D.C.—Congressman Jim Matheson said today a U.S. Department of Transportation grant for $19.6 million will reimburse the Utah Transit Authority for work underway on the Midvale-Jordan TRAX light-rail spur. Matheson’s office received the grant notice Thursday.
“This is great news for Wasatch Front commuters who will soon have another travel option for getting to work, to school and to leisure activities,” said Matheson.
Matheson said the funds are to reimburse UTA for the final design and construction start of the 10.6 mile Mid-Jordan Light rail line. In June, UTA held the groundbreaking ceremony. Roughly 10 percent of the project has been completed. It will serve riders from Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan, connecting with the main north-south TRAX line at the Fashion Place West station.
Matheson has been a strong advocate for both transit and highway funding, as a way to foster safety and ease traffic congestion, improve air quality, and promote economic development along the Wasatch Front.
