Justice Department Grant Awarded to St. George Police

Salt Lake City, UT—Congressman Jim Matheson said today that a technology grant awarded to the St. George police department will mean a better-equipped crime-fighting force in that city.  The Department of Justice has awarded a Byrne grant in the amount of $13,321 to the St. George Police Department.

“The Byrne grant program provides critical funding for the state and local initiatives that are so important for keeping neighborhood streets safe,” said Matheson, a long-time supporter of the program.

The City of St. George will use this grant award to buy laptop computers for officers to use in their patrol cars, allowing them to immediately access crime computer databases at the scene.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program was authorized by Congress in 1988. Funding for local law enforcement through the program remained fairly steady until 2001 when it began to decrease.  Matheson, in 2006, joined the bipartisan effort in the House to reverse that decline.
