Hearing This Week on Matheson Bill to Safeguard Prescription Drugs

Washington D.C.—Congressman Jim Matheson said his bipartisan legislation to ensure the safety and security of Americans’ prescription drug supply will be highlighted in a Congressional hearing this week.  Matheson and Indiana Republican Steve Buyer recently introduced the Safeguarding America’s Pharmaceutical Act.  Both are members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is continuing to look at comprehensive overhaul of food and drug safety.

“The problem of counterfeit drugs in this country is growing.  The victims are often seriously ill people who need real, quality drugs the most—cancer patients, AIDS patients, people being treated for heart disease.  It’s imperative that have a secure tracking system to ensure that the medicines folks are taking aren’t fake or tainted,” said Matheson.

The hearing on draft legislation overhauling the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be held Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 10 a.m., in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office building.

Matheson and Buyer introduced HR 5839 in mid-April.  It will be highlighted in the Health Subcommittee hearing.

Along with the national pedigree system, the bill authorizes the FDA to destroy its seizure of counterfeit drugs.  Currently, the FDA is required to return seized counterfeit drugs back to the counterfeiters.
