Matheson Amends Bill So Energy Efficient Small Businesses Get Grant Preference

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Jim Matheson has amended small business legislation to give energy-efficient small businesses preference in applying for the research and technology grants offered under two federal small business programs.  Matheson’s amendment was included in passage of HR 5819 – improvements to the Small Business Innovation Research program and the Small Business Technology Transfer program.

Matheson’s amendment is a nod towards the energy efficiencies adopted by small business that in turn helps their bottom line.

“Rising health insurance, transportation and energy costs have made starting and sustaining a small business more difficult than in the past,” said Matheson.  “My amendment helps to incentivize energy efficient practices by rewarding businesses that seek to reduce their costs through a reduced carbon footprint.”

The Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs were designed to improve the competitiveness of small businesses in the fields of technology training and technology information exchange.  Matheson noted that a Utah company that has benefitted from SBIR grants has developed a technology to help doctors diagnose breast cancer.  It already has reduced energy usage and therefore, reduced its carbon footprint—a measurement of the environmental impact due to the release of greenhouse gases.
