Matheson Secures Housing for Tribes
Washington D.C.—Congressman Jim Matheson said 28 unused mobile homes from the Hurricane Katrina relief effort are coming to tribal governments in Utah who requested them.
In September 2007, the Federal Emergency Management Agency offered 1,000 mobile homes to tribal governments as required in the post-Katrina Emergency Reform Act. Tribal leaders of the Paiute, Ute, Ute Mountain Ute and Northwestern Shoshone sent in housing requests.
“Housing shortages are a chronic problem for Utah tribal governments. I am pleased that these mobile homes—which comply with all federal construction and safety codes—are being made available to the tribes,” said Matheson.
Ute Tribe Business Committee Chairman Curtis Cesspooch welcomed the news.
“Housing is a critical issue for the Ute Tribe. We continue to look for any opportunities that will benefit tribal members. We appreciate Congressman Matheson’s support of our effort to acquire this housing,” Cesspooch said.
Matheson said plans for transporting the mobile homes from Arkansas to Utah are in the works.
