Matheson Supports Tax Relief for UtahnsWashington D.C.—Congressman Jim Matheson said most Utah families would receive tax relief in the form of rebate checks, under a bipartisan economic stimulus package approved by the House today. The $150 billion dollar measure also aims to help businesses and homeowners. “There’s evidence that our economy is increasingly headed into a recession. Most people think the best way to try and head off recession is to quickly get money into the hands of consumers who may be struggling with high energy prices and falling home values,” said Matheson. Matheson said the bill is the result of bipartisan negotiations between the House and the administration. He said the centerpiece is tax relief of up to $600 per individual and $1,200 per married couple, plus an additional $300 per child. He said rebate checks could be mailed as early as mid-May. Every Utahn who earned at least $3,000 would be eligible. Tax relief begins to phase out above incomes of $75,000 for an individual and $150,000 for a married couple. Matheson said Utah businesses will get an immediate tax write-off for capital investments and new equipment purchases this year. For some families struggling against home foreclosure, Matheson said the bill expands affordable mortgage loan opportunities through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). “The bill is a responsible attempt to jumpstart spending in a way that keeps the economy from stalling, or at least reduce the impact of an economic slowdown on Utah families,” said Matheson. # # # |
