Matheson Secures Support for Water Conservancy Project in Washington County

Washington D.C.-- Congressman Jim Matheson said a Utah project designed to save water and improve water delivery is included in the annual agricultural appropriations bill scheduled to passed the House this week.  The measure - HR 3161-provides funding for the US Department of Agriculture as well as for rural development.

"In an arid state like Utah, projects to conserve water and protect the watershed are critical to Southern Utah communities and Southern Utah economies.  I am pleased an important project in Washington County will receive support," said Matheson.

Matheson said the legislation includes $2.9 million for the Washington County Water Conservancy District for the purpose of building pipelines to replace open ditches and canals in order to promote conservation and utilization of water.

St. George Mayor Dan McArthur said it's an important project for his city.

"Covering the ditches and canals conserves the water as a secondary source for watering the landscape.  It also creates a safety zone against accidental drowning. The abandoned canals become an addition for our recreational trail system and offers more trail access for walkers, bikers and horses in our fast-growing community," said Mayor McArthur.

Washington County Water Conservancy District Director Ron Thompson echoed the need for the upgrade.

"This project will help us cut down on evaporation, conserve water, and promote more efficient water delivery to the cities throughout Washington County.  The money is much appreciated," said Thompson.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
