March 27, 2006 Matheson Announces Grant to support Utah Drug and Gang Task ForcesWashington DC-Congressman Jim Matheson said today that the Department of Justice has awarded a $1.5 million Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant to the state of Utah. The money goes to the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice. It will be used to support drug and gang task forces and projects in the state. "Byrne grants are a proven method of helping local law enforcement fight drug and gang-related crimes in our communities. I will continue to be an advocate for funding of this vital program," said Matheson. The Edward Byrne Memorial JAG program allows states, tribes and local government to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on local needs. The funds can be used for law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections, drug treatment programs and planning, evaluation and technology improvement programs. Matheson said he will oppose the elimination of the Byrne JAG program as proposed this year in the President's budget. # # # | |
