Matheson Statement on PFS Offer to take Nation's Spent Nuclear Fuel

Washington DC-Congressman Jim Matheson had the following reaction to the proposal from Private Fuel Storage CEO John Parkyn to the leaders of the House and Senate Energy Committees:

"As Utahns, we have always known that when it comes to intentions about dumping nuclear garbage, we are swimming in shark-infested waters.  The proposal outlined in this letter, a "solution to the issue of spent nuclear fuel" confirms what we have always suspected-Utah would become-for decades-- the de facto repository of thousands of tons of the most lethal waste on earth.  The Utah and Nevada delegations have a solution:  leave the waste where it sits until an acceptable, scientifically-sound disposal policy is developed.  This proposal is nothing short of a terrible idea made worse."
