December 08, 2005 Matheson Announces Service Academy NomineesWashington DC-Congressman Jim Matheson is pleased to announce that 13 young men and one woman from Utah's 2nd Congressional District have been selected as nominees to the United States Service Academies. Their names have been submitted for consideration as members of the academy classes entering in July 2006. Each U.S. Representative and Senator may have five cadets at each of the four service academies (Naval, Air Force, Military and Merchant Marine) at any one time. All candidates must be U.S. citizens and legal residents of Utah and must never have been married. "These represent some of the best and brightest young adults that Utah has to offer," said Matheson. "But the high caliber of all the applicants really makes the selection process difficult." Matheson thanked the volunteers-some of whom served in the military-that make up his Service Academy Selection Committee for their help with the nominations. Ten young people were nominated for one appointment slot at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; seven were nominated for one appointment slot at West Point; six were nominated for one appointment slot at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and six were nominated for one slot at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY.
